Predictive Glucose Alerts — How GlucoHome Warns You Before You Go Low
Reactive alerts tell you when you're already low. Predictive alerts tell you when you're about to go low — while you still have time to prevent it. Here's how GlucoHome's AI-powered predictive system works and how to set it up.
The problem with standard CGM alerts
Most CGM systems, including the Dexcom app, offer threshold alerts: they notify you when your glucose crosses a specific value — say, when you drop below 3.9 mmol/L (70 mg/dL). These alerts are essential, but they have a major limitation: they're reactive.
By the time a threshold alert fires, you're already hypoglycemic. You might be driving, in a meeting, or asleep — situations where it's harder (or dangerous) to treat a low quickly. You're forced to react to something that's already happened, rather than prevent it from happening at all.
How predictive alerts work
GlucoHome's predictive alert system analyzes three sources of data to forecast low glucose events 30 to 45 minutes before they occur:
- Your current glucose trajectory — The direction and rate at which your glucose is falling. A steady decline of 0.1 mmol/L every 5 minutes looks very different from a steep drop of 0.3 mmol/L every 5 minutes.
- Your historical patterns — How your glucose has behaved in similar situations in the past. For example, if you consistently drop after morning exercise, the AI learns that pattern and can warn you earlier on days when you exercise.
- Recent meal and activity logs — If you logged a meal 90 minutes ago with fast-acting carbs, the AI knows you're past the peak and the glucose effect is waning. If you logged exercise 30 minutes ago, it knows you're more insulin-sensitive right now.
The algorithm combines these signals to estimate where your glucose will be in 30–45 minutes. If the prediction crosses below your low threshold, GlucoHome triggers a predictive low alert.
Prediction accuracy improves over time
When you first connect your Dexcom, GlucoHome has limited data about your personal glucose behavior. Predictive alerts start out using generic models based on thousands of anonymized users. As you log more meals, track more days, and build a personal glucose history, the predictions become increasingly tailored to you — and more accurate.
What a predictive alert looks like
When GlucoHome detects a predicted low, you'll see:
- A notification on your dashboard (and a push notification if you've enabled them in your browser or on the GlucoHome Android app)
- A predicted trajectory line on your glucose chart showing where the AI expects your glucose to go over the next 45 minutes
- A time estimate: "Predicted low in 35 minutes" — giving you a concrete window to take action
- A suggested action: "Consider 10–15g of fast-acting carbs now to prevent this low"
Why 30–45 minutes of lead time matters
Thirty minutes is enough time to eat a small snack and let it absorb before you actually go low. If you're driving, you can safely pull over. If you're in a meeting, you can discreetly grab glucose tabs. If you're asleep, your phone's vibration alarm can wake you before you drop into dangerous territory.
This lead time also reduces overtreatment. When you're already low, it's easy to panic and eat too much, leading to a rebound high. When you catch the low early, you can treat it with a smaller, more precise amount of carbs — keeping your glucose more stable overall and improving your Time-in-Range.
Setting up predictive alerts
Predictive alerts are enabled by default in GlucoHome, but you can customize the sensitivity and threshold in your settings:
- Go to Dashboard → Settings → Alerts
- Set your low glucose threshold (default is 3.9 mmol/L / 70 mg/dL, but you can adjust this to match your personal target)
- Choose your alert sensitivity:
- Conservative — Only alerts when the AI is very confident you'll go low. Fewer false alarms, but you might miss some borderline lows.
- Balanced (recommended) — Alerts when the AI predicts a low with moderate confidence. Good balance between sensitivity and specificity.
- Aggressive — Alerts on any downward trend that could lead to a low. More false alarms, but you'll catch nearly every low before it happens.
- Enable push notifications so you receive alerts even when the GlucoHome dashboard isn't open
False positives and what to do about them
No predictive system is perfect. Sometimes GlucoHome will predict a low that doesn't actually happen — maybe your glucose leveled off on its own, or you ate a snack without logging it, or your body's glucose regulation kicked in unexpectedly.
False positives aren't necessarily bad: it's safer to warn you about a low that doesn't happen than to miss a low that does. But if you're getting too many false alerts, try these adjustments:
- Switch to Conservative sensitivity
- Lower your low threshold slightly (e.g., from 3.9 to 3.5 mmol/L) so the AI only alerts on more significant predicted lows
- Log meals and exercise more consistently — this gives the AI better context and reduces spurious predictions
Predictive alerts are not a substitute for CGM threshold alerts
Predictive alerts are an additional safety layer, not a replacement. You should still keep your Dexcom's standard low glucose alarm enabled at 3.9 mmol/L (or your prescribed threshold). The Dexcom alarm is your last-line safety net if the prediction is wrong or if you ignored the earlier warning.
Community-powered predictions
One of GlucoHome's unique advantages is that our predictive algorithm is trained on anonymized data from thousands of users. When someone logs a meal — say, "50g white rice" — and we see how their glucose responded, that pattern feeds back into the collective model.
This means that even if you haven't eaten white rice before, GlucoHome can make an educated prediction about how it will affect you based on how similar users responded. Over time, as your personal data accumulates, the model shifts toward your unique physiology. You get the best of both worlds: a well-trained baseline from the community and personalized refinement from your own history.
What about predicting highs?
GlucoHome's predictive system currently focuses on low glucose events because hypoglycemia is the more immediate safety risk. Predicting highs is on our roadmap — the same trajectory-based approach can be used to warn you when a post-meal spike is likely to exceed your high threshold, giving you time to consider a correction dose (in consultation with your care team).
Clinical evidence
Predictive low glucose alerts have been studied extensively in clinical trials of CGM systems like the Dexcom G7's "Urgent Low Soon" feature. Research shows that predictive alerts can reduce time spent in hypoglycemia by 30–50% compared to threshold-only alerts, particularly during sleep.
GlucoHome extends these findings by incorporating meal and activity context, which standard CGM predictions don't consider. Early internal data from GlucoHome users shows a predictive accuracy of approximately 94% when sensitivity is set to Balanced — meaning 94 out of 100 predicted lows do occur within the forecasted time window.
